ICE-6G GIA Model

Glacial Isostatic Adjustment (GIA) is the response of the solid Earth to mass redistribution due to past and present-day changes to glaciers and ice sheets. GIA generates crustal displacements, sea-level changes, changes to the Earth’s gravitational field and plays a significant role in contemporary sea-level change. The vertical crustal displacements induced by GIA are a major contributor to relative sea-level change on a global scale. As such, GIA is tightly integrated into the science of global change, and it is subject to a continuous development motivated by the increasing amount of high-precision observations available from various fields of geophysics and geodesy. A GIA model is a numerical simulation of global glacial isostatic adjustment (GIA). ICE-6G is a new model of the last deglaciation event of the Late Quaternary ice age. It differs from previously published models in this sequence in that it has been explicitly refined by applying all of the available Global Positioning System (GPS) measurements of vertical motion of the crust that may be brought to bear to constrain the thickness of local ice cover as well as the timing of its removal. Additional space geodetic constraints have also been applied to specify the reference frame within which the GPS data are described. References: ICE-6G_C Peltier, R., Argus, D., & Drummond, R.
